Beginner Guide - Hero Roles Part 1 (2015/09/15)

This is a general guide for new players (PL30-50) to understand how I see the heroes' role in this game. If you wanna know more about specific hero, you can take a look to my ongoing Hero Guide series.

As I mentioned before, I see there are 7 roles for heroes (1 hero might have more than 1 roles), including:
  1. Caster, doing a lot of skill damages (Most important @PL30 - 50)
  2. Tanks, protecting everyone else
  3. Range DPS, doing physical damage in range
  4. Melee DPS, doing physical damage in melee
  5. Support, assisting others with utility skills other than heal (skills without damage but special effects)
  6. Healer, healing minions and / or heroes
  7. Charger, cavalries that bypass tanks to storm squishy units

I will share Caster and Tanks in part 1 of this guide.

Caster
Caster uses hero skills to do most of their damage. Yes, a range DPS or melee DPS can be a caster (like Sarky, William etc). But some heroes are worth only because of the hero (such as 3* archers. Archers are officially the weakest minion in v1.8). They are the primary sources of damage @PL30 - 50. So put as many efforts to get hero skill scrolls as you can on these casters.

Great and easily obtainable Caster @PL 30 - 50
  1. 3* archer, super high Area of Effect (AoE) damage but weakest minions
  2. 3* musketeers, super high AoE damage and great minions (range DPS)
  3. 3* mounted archers, killing enemies' heroes (esp. casters) are super important @PL 30 - 50

4* heroes recommendation @PL30 - 50
(Excluded Merlin as he is for paid players only)
  1. Sarky, a must-use for all PLs; also a decent Range DPS
  2. Nichols, hero-killing machine but weak minions
  3. William, great caster and melee DPS
  4. Galahad, also a great charger with stuns
(You can check out their descriptions in Tavern, via the book button next to your gold indicator)

Tank
Tanks stay in the frontline of the rally and protect units behind them by absorbing damages for them. They should have very high HP and armor in order to survive long enough. Remember to save morale skills to protect your DPS and Casters in case they are in trouble.

Pavisers are the typical Tanks. Their heroes are usually with defensive skill (like Carter's Sacred Shield, reducing skill damage on his rally). But they don't do much damage.

Infantries are another common type of Tanks not because of the minions but the hero (their minions are weak on their own). Summer (1-up minions, great at higher PL) and Reinhard (invincible for 10s @skill level 10) are great examples of tanks with infantries. Their tanking ability become much better at higher PL.

Arbalists are also great tanks because of Alash, who is almost immune to physical damage thanks for his and his minions' dodge (ability to ignore physical damage). In v1.8.5, advanced arbalists can dodge too, giving huge potentials for arbalists to be tanks.

Great and easily obtainable Tanks @PL 30 - 50
  1. 3* Dwarf, skill damage reduction for the rally is good against Casters
  2. 3* Infantry, the lesser version of the Legendary Reinhard

4* heroes recommendation @PL30 - 50 (Updated on 2015/09/21)
  1. Reinhard, a must-use tank for all PLs; max his skill soonest you can
  2. Alash, a must-use tank for all PLs; max his skill soonest you can
  3. Cedric, a must-use, unkillable tank who regenerates HP
  4. Carter, same as 3* Dwarf
  5. Charles Martel, good at this PL range only
  6. [New] El Cid, good tank with AoE skill damage reduction
